Our Story
Our Story
I’m Tomo, the owner of Sakura Soup. I made the big move from Japan to the US, and my journey began in a charming little town called Le Sueur, Minnesota. Just a quick five-minute drive took me to a lovely lake, and we even had a nice golf course right in town! The summers were hot and humid, while winters brought snow and cold—perfect for golfing, skiing, and ice fishing. I truly loved soaking in the beauty of Minnesota’s four seasons.
But there was one problem. Whenever I craved a delicious bowl of ramen, I had to hop in the car for a long 1 hour and 20-minute drive to St. Paul just to find a Japanese restaurant. With such limited access to my favorite comfort food and ramen prices on the higher side, I often ended up settling for instant ramen instead. While it was budget-friendly, it just didn’t hit the spot like the real deal. Eventually, I decided to give up on ramen altogether, but deep down, I always dreamed of creating something special that would satisfy all ramen lovers out there—making it easier for families to enjoy a delightful bowl anytime and anywhere!
Then I took another leap and moved to California, where I learned how to craft liquid broth concentrates through my experience with ‘Savory Choice’ over 13 years. In 2019, we launched Sakura Soup Company with our very own twist on ‘Savory Choice’—introducing our Ramen Soup Bases! We started selling our products at farmers markets around the San Francisco Bay area. Just a few months after we got rolling, the pandemic hit hard. It was touch-and-go for a while; we even thought about closing up our business. But thanks to the incredible support from our customers and their valuable feedback (not to mention all those warm smiles!), we found the strength to keep going. Every product we’ve developed or improved has been inspired by what our wonderful customers shared with us at those markets. I can’t express enough gratitude for everyone—customers, vendors, friends, and employees—who stood by us during this journey. My hope is that as our business grows, we can give back to the community with our unique products!
